AN ENGINEER VISITS OUR SCHOOL.
During the month of February, 4 th, 5 th and 6 th classes were lucky enough to receive a visit from John, a software engineer who specialises in 3D printing. Having delivered a talk to the pupils, John next demonstrated how the 3D printer works, as well as showcasing some objects that he had printed out in advance of the visit.
3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-
Some of the pupils were familiar to some degree with the process as they had used 3D pens, widely available from the major toy stores. John reminded them that the 3D printer that he had brought in to show them was a professional industrial device and was much more expensive than the pens!
The pupils had fun checking out the various printed objects that John had created and they had all their queries dealt with in a question and answer session towards the end.
