Exploring Light, the Sun and the Tyndall Effect.
Room 9 (6 th class) took on quite a sophisticated investigation when they explored exactly why the sky is blue. Inspired by the Co. Carlow scientist John Tyndall, and by the fact that their teacher Mr. Kinsella is a Carlow man himself, the pupils began by recording their own hypothesis before discovering the scientific reasons as to why our sky is blue. The pupils were also involved in recognising that the sun is the most important source of light energy for the Earth (they integrated this with the strand unit ‘Earth in Space’ in the Geography curriculum). They discussed all the different reasons why sunlight is so important on the Earth. Finally, the pupils also looked into safety issues: the dangers of looking directly at the sun, of exposing the skin to warm sunlight which may cause sunburn and of becoming dehydrated in very hot weather or countries.
