SPACE WEEK!

We were very excited about the announcement of a brand new STEM week to occur at the beginning of October 2016: Space Week! So from the 3rd to the 7th October, Room 5 (1st class) got involved with a whole array of space related activities and themes. We began by brainstorming what we knew about space just to get our thoughts rolling! Mr. Davis read aloud a book to the class – ‘Man on the Moon (a day in the life of Bob)’ by Simon Bartram – to act as a stimulus. Following this, the class worked in their groups and were presented with the following materials: straws, paper, scissors, markers and tape. The challenge was to design a rocket that could be ‘launched’ by blowing air through the straw. We had to use our problem solving skills. Some straws simply wouldn’t launch until we figured out that they needed to be completely airtight. Later in the week, we discussed the sun and the planets in our solar system. We talked about why life on earth needs sunlight. Everyone was amazed when teacher explained that over a million earths could fit inside the sun – wow!
