VISIT FROM A CONSERVATIONIST

On Monday October 3rd 2016 our school happily received a visit from the biodiversity expert Patrick Hunt. This trip was organised by our Green Schools Committee so thanks to Ms. Murphy and Ms. Brady! Patrick kindly offered to work with 2nd, 3rd and 5th classes. This involved the classes being brought out to the school field and the school garden. So, equipped with trowels, pooters, magnifying jars and clipboards, the pupils got busy trudging through the field and examining the foliage. Patrick proved to be a font of information as he pointed out different species of insects and birdlife, not to mention various types of plants. Soil is a world in itself, crowded with organisms. One teaspoon of soil is teeming with life, with up to a billion bacterial cells and other microorganisms. Patrick also stressed the importance of conserving clean and healthy environments for these plants and animals. The pupils listened avidly and showed great enthusiasm in taking part in the hands on activities.
Patrick proved to be most accommodating as he offered to hang around until the end of the school day. Once the children had gone home, he offered to bring around all the teachers for a biodiversity talk based on the flora and fauna of the school grounds. Patrick explained distinguishing features of the leaves of different trees, as well as the different methods of reproduction used by plants such as the bramble. The teachers really enjoyed his presentation. Many thanks to Patrick for all his time and expertise on the day.
